CASHIER

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

This class of positions encompasses cashier work of varying degrees of difficulty.  There are two assignment levels within this class of positions.  The following are typical assignments within this class of positions.  All personnel perform related work.

 

Assignment Level I

 

Under supervision, with little latitude for independent action or decision, performs cashier work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility.

 

Accepts, has custody of, and accounts for cash and checks received for the payment of taxes and assessments or charges.

 

Issues receipts and records payments.

 

Operates coin machines, cash registers or window posting bookkeeping machines.

 

Carries bags of coins and bills.

 

Checks, verifies, counts and is responsible for all monies received and collected.

 

May make bank deposits of receipts.

 

Maintains accounts, posts charges, takes trial balances, prepares and/or processes reports and authorizations for changes in amounts due, delinquent lists, arrears, refunds, etc.

 

Assignment Level II

 

Under general supervision, with latitude for the exercise of independent action or decision, supervises and trains a group or section of subordinates performing cashier duties.

 

Performs difficult cashier duties involving large sums of cash and checks received for payment.

 

Receives, consolidates and verifies currency counted by subordinate cashiers.

 

Prepares money for deposits.

 

Qualification Requirements

 

1.          A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of full-time experience dealing with sums of money in such positions as cashier, sales cashier, bank teller, housing teller, railroad clerk, or toll collector; or

 

2.          Two years of full-time experience as described in "1" above; or

 

3.          Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.  However, all candidates must have at least one year of full-time experience as described in "1" above.

 

At the time of appointment, eligibles must qualify for bonding.
