MISSION STATEMENT

Constitutional objectives:
a. To unite the AFSCME Clerical and Administrative Employees and Related Titles Employees under the jurisdiction stated in the Charter of Local 1549; the New York City, Public, Semi-Public, Quasi-Public and wholly or partially tax supported or tax exempt agencies, institutions and authorities for mutual protection, support and welfare;
b. To promote and extend the organization of such employees into one city-wide local with a chapter in each of the departments and agencies mentioned in Article III, paragraph a;
c. To establish and maintain fair and adequate wages, hours and working conditions for such members;
d. To draw up and campaign for legislative programs on behalf of the membership; and to represent it before legislative bodies;
e. To campaign for and win the fullest measure of collective bargaining for the local and the affiliated chapters;
f. To promote and foster better understanding by the public of our members' problems;
g. To support the general labor movement and worthy civil causes.

We are part of a larger labor movement, and strive to work in accord with, and achieve the aims and goals of District Council 37, our International Union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the American Federation of Labor-Congress of International Organizations (AFL-CIO), locally and universally.

We organize and represent working men and women, in a common cause, with a common goal, for the common good. We ensure that our voice will be heard and our impact be felt, in the workplace and in the communities in which we live. We will support elected public officials who promote the labor movement's agenda. We will hold all elected public officials accountable for their actions.

We strive to give all of our members new opportunities for a better standard of living and quality of life.

We promote, maintain and protect the following basic principles:

Honesty: Honesty between members, elected officers and staff is crucial to an open, effective union.

Inclusiveness/Participation:
No member should be left behind. No member should feel as if he/she is left behind. Every member is entitled to have a voice and be heard We encourage every member to be involved. We encourage and expect full participation in all union matters, at all levels.

Democracy: The Local's mission and course of action will be determined via democratic processes. Every member has an equal voice in determining the Local's future and in the conducting of the union's business.

Respect: Every member's opinion is valued and respected by leadership and membership alike.

Diversity: We celebrate our diversity and draw strength from it.

Accountability:
Officers and staff will be accountable for their words, actions and decisions.

Fiscal Responsibility:
Business will be conducted mindful of the responsibility to exercise fiscal prudence and responsibility with the members' dues money.

Integrity: The officers and staff of this local are expected to adhere to basic moral principles in representing the membership and in transaction of business.
